This play by the Spanish dramatist Fernando Arrabal belongs to the theater of the paradox, and it also shows the author's completely different way of looking at events. The play is the author's first work, which he wrote at the age of twenty under the influence of the Korean War. However, it became a work condemning all wars. The events of the play take place on a battlefield. "Picnic" originally means "an outing in the field", but while reading the play it becomes clear that this is an outing on the battlefield. Although the play has only one act, it reflects a very great idea. Sapo's parents, who cannot imagine the horrors of war, come to him on the battlefield to spend Sunday with their son. When the enemy soldier Sepo appears, Sapo takes him prisoner, but invites him to take part in the picnic. The picnic goes on in high spirits, with human qualities, but the merciless battlefield destroys them. The play reveals the hideous face of war, which has brought slaughter to people's lives in all times and in all societies. It shows that the people who started the war can no longer stop it.
