The Mausoleum of Amir Temur is recognized as a unique work of Central Asian architecture. Construction of the mausoleum was begun in 1403 by the great Sahibkiran Amir Temur and completed during the reign of Mirzo Ulugbek.
When the mausoleum was finished, the body of Mirsayid Baraka, Amir Temur's spiritual teacher, was moved to it and buried at the head side of the Sahibkiran. According to some legends, Amir Temur bequeathed that he be buried at the foot side of his pir. Miranshah Mirzo, Shahrukh Mirzo, Sheikh Sayyid Umar, Mirzo Ulugbek, and Ulugbek's two children who died in infancy – Abdullah and Abdurahman – are also buried in the mausoleum.
Ulugbek had the interior of the building redecorated, daxmas were placed on the floor of the mausoleum, and an elegant marble stone railing was built around it. Since 1424 the mausoleum has been entered through a multi-domed gallery built against its east side. Only the portal (peshtaq) has survived from the Muhammad Sultan complex. Brass, lapis lazuli and gold water were used in the dome.
The walls of the mausoleum are covered with blue, sky-blue and white glazed tiles, which are laid in geometric patterns, inscribed with Arabic script and skillfully made. The circumference of the lower part of the dome is 15 meters in diameter and the height of the circle is 12.5 meters, yet its weight is not felt. From the crypt chamber to the top of the dome it is 36 meters.
The sides and upper parts of the doorway built for entering the mausoleum during the reign of Mirzo Ulugbek are elegantly decorated. At the bottom of the wall there is an izora (dado) made of bluish translucent onyx. The seams of the onyx are decorated with inlaid bluish stones.
On the sagana tombstones in the middle of the mausoleum there are inscribed stones dedicated to the Timurids. A dark green jade (nephrite) stone was placed over the grave of Amir Temur.
In 1994-1996, on the initiative of the First President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, I. Karimov, large-scale repair and restoration work was carried out at the mausoleum.
