As a result of 30 years of research by a special archaeological group established in Samarkand in 1958, the archaeological periods of Afrosiab were identified, and the architecture, material and spiritual culture, crafts and way of life of the ancient people were studied. The world-famous Afrosiab murals were also discovered and restored. The items found by the expedition are kept and displayed in the Afrosiab Museum of the History of the City of Samarkand.
The Afrosiab Museum was founded on 24 October 1970. The museum illuminates the history and material culture of ancient Afrosiab, covering the periods from the 8th century BC to the beginning of the 13th century.
The museum building consists of two floors with 11 exhibition halls. Each hall is distinguished by its own history and periods:
About 2,500 items are preserved and displayed in the museum's collection.
