The international Samarkand Marathon has received the World Athletics Elite Label, the only race of this level in the CIS countries. The start on 8 November will be given by the legendary British runner Sir Mo Farah, a four-time Olympic champion and six-time world champion.
The label means that the marathon officially meets high international standards, professional world-class athletes take part, and the results count towards the World Athletics world rankings. Participants from 72 countries have already registered this year.
The start and finish are located at Registan Square, and the routes run through the historic centre of Samarkand. All funds raised will go towards building children's sports playgrounds in Uzbekistan.
