Kalon Minaret and Mosque
Minaret & Mosque · Bukhara

The 47-metre Kalon Minaret, built in 1127, is famous for the legend that even Genghis Khan bowed his head before it and spared it from destruction. The neighbouring Kalon Mosque holds 12,000 people and is the second-largest mosque in Central Asia (after Bibi-Khanym). Illuminated at night, the minaret becomes the symbolic view of Bukhara. Poi Kalon Square forms an ensemble together with the Mir-i-Arab Madrasah and is considered the most magnificent spot in the city centre.
